The South Carolina women’s tennis team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament after defeating Maryland 4-0 on May 1 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

The win allows South Carolina, ranked No. 32, to continue its postseason run. The result highlights a strong performance against No. 33 Maryland and secures the team’s place in the next stage of competition.

South Carolina started strong with a decisive doubles victory from Lauren Friedman and Helena Buchwald, who defeated Maryland’s top pair 6-0. Although Jane Dunyon and Sara Borkop lost their match on court three, Kaitlyn Carnicella and Jana Stojanova clinched the doubles point for South Carolina with a close 7-5 win after overcoming a late challenge from their opponents.

In singles play, Carnicella was first to finish with a dominant 6-1, 6-1 victory on court one. Buchwald followed with another straight-set win over Oliwia Orlinska to put South Carolina ahead by three points. Friedman secured the overall match for her team by winning her singles contest in two sets as well.

With this victory, South Carolina will face either North Carolina or Charleston Southern in the next round at Chewning Tennis Center.
