U.S. Senators Tim Scott and Bill Cassidy have initiated a Senate Republican working group to explore legislative reforms for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The aim is to enhance the CDC’s response to public health needs, particularly in light of its performance during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Senator Scott expressed concerns about the CDC’s transparency and statutory overreach during the pandemic, highlighting a need for reforms to restore public trust. “In efforts to restore trust in public health, reforms need to take place so that the American people can trust this agency once again,” he stated.
Dr. Cassidy emphasized the importance of clear guidance from the CDC during crises, noting that failures could threaten public health. He acknowledged efforts by the Trump administration towards health transparency but stressed the necessity for enduring legislative changes.
The working group includes Senators Ron Johnson, Mike Lee, Roger Marshall, Lisa Murkowski, and Rand Paul. Senator Johnson criticized the CDC’s role during the pandemic, calling for significant reforms to restore scientific integrity and public trust. Senator Marshall also pointed out the need for major reform following what he described as mishandling by the CDC.
Dr. Paul highlighted issues of oversight and authority expansion by bureaucrats at the CDC during the pandemic, emphasizing that rebuilding public trust involves preventing future overreach.
