U.S. Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina engaged in a discussion with Jamieson Greer, President Trump’s nominee for U.S. Trade Representative, during a Senate Finance Committee hearing. The dialogue focused on key issues such as market access for American exports, the impact of tariffs, China’s trade practices, and the use of economic strategies to bolster national security.

Senator Scott emphasized the importance of expanding market access for U.S. goods, noting that “ninety-five percent of our customers are outside of our nation.” He highlighted South Carolina’s contribution with “$36.4 billion of manufactured goods” and “$1.2 billion” in agricultural products supporting jobs globally. Scott questioned Greer on his plans to secure market access within the first 100 days.

Regarding tariffs, Scott remarked on President Trump’s strategy: “It seems like his ability to recalibrate the global system… is a net positive long-term.”

On China’s trade practices, Scott stated bluntly: “They lie, they cheat, they steal,” questioning how these actions align with their World Trade Organization status.

Scott also stressed using economic measures as primary tools for national security: “Our first weapon for national security ought to be an economic weapon.”

The full exchange between Senator Scott and Mr. Greer is available for viewing online.
