U.S. Senator Tim Scott (R-S.C.) has addressed South Carolina residents as storms strengthen off the state’s coastline and the federal government faces a possible shutdown on October 1.

“With storms intensifying off our coast and the possibility of a government shutdown on the horizon, I want to reassure South Carolinians that my office remains committed to serving you. Even if federal funding lapses, my team will continue to assist constituents and our phone lines will remain open,” said Scott in a statement released Friday.

Scott urged residents to prepare for severe weather by following instructions from local emergency officials, gathering essential supplies, and knowing evacuation routes. “As we closely monitor the developing weather, now is the time to prepare and pray for protection. Please follow all guidance from local emergency officials, make sure you have essential supplies, and know your evacuation route. Your safety is my top priority, and my office stands ready to coordinate with local, state, and federal partners to provide any necessary support,” he said.

He also noted that during previous government shutdowns, agencies such as the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and U.S. Coast Guard have continued operations despite funding lapses.
