Sean Bishton has been named principal of St. John’s High School, effective July 1, according to a May 6 announcement from the Charleston County School District.
Bishton brings more than three decades of experience in education and is returning to Charleston County, where he previously served as a middle school math coach supporting instruction and student achievement across multiple schools. His career includes leadership roles at elementary, middle, and high school levels both in South Carolina and internationally.
“We are excited to welcome Mr. Bishton back to Charleston County,” said Superintendent Anita Huggins. “He brings a depth of experience, a strong instructional focus, and a genuine commitment to building relationships with students, staff, and families. His leadership has consistently resulted in stronger outcomes for students, and I am confident he will build on the proud tradition of St. John’s High School.”
Bishton currently serves as principal of Pelion High School where he led measurable gains in student achievement across all four core content areas and improved the school’s report card rating through data-driven approaches. He also expanded access to advanced coursework, strengthened fine arts programs, enhanced extracurricular offerings, and established a Freshman Academy for better support during high school transitions.
Earlier in his career as principal at Muller Road Middle School, Bishton oversaw significant academic growth including a 30 percent increase in English Language Arts scores and a 10 percent rise in math achievement. The school received national recognition such as being designated a National School to Watch and an AVID Schoolwide Site of Distinction during his tenure.
Bishton’s international background includes early leadership roles as deputy headmaster and teacher in South Africa where he contributed to curriculum development, staff training initiatives, student program coordination, extracurricular activities management—experiences that continue influencing his approach toward strong school culture development.
He will work closely with Executive Associate Vanessa Denney at St. John’s High School for transition planning aimed at continuity for students while strengthening existing relationships within the community.
