South Carolina’s Department of Transportation (SCDOT) has announced plans to reduce its regulations by 30%. This decision follows a comprehensive internal review led by Secretary Justin Powell, who assumed office earlier this year. The initiative aims to eliminate outdated and redundant regulations to enhance operational efficiency.
“One of my first priorities as Secretary of Transportation was to see how we could be more efficient,” said Powell. “As part of that effort, we have conducted an examination of the Department regulations to see if there were requirements that were no longer needed, didn’t work, or didn’t make sense. I am very proud to announce that, as part of our ongoing efforts to modernize SCDOT, we will be able to cut the total amount of our regulations by almost a third.”
The proposed changes will be published in the State Register for submission to the General Assembly during the 2026 legislative session. The public is invited to provide feedback on these regulatory adjustments once they are posted later this month.
