The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) has announced the completion of two significant projects in Columbia, aimed at improving safety and enhancing the local areas. The projects, located on Harden Street and South Main Street, were designed to make roadways safer for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists.
The South Main Street Project, situated near the State House, now features a dedicated cycle lane, landscaping, additional street lighting, new crosswalks, and more visible pavement markings. These enhancements are intended to improve safety for all users of the area.
Similarly, the Harden Street Project focused on implementing safety improvements. This included reducing travel lanes as a traffic calming measure and shortening pedestrian crossing distances. Flashing yellow arrows have been introduced to allow drivers to make left-hand turns after yielding to oncoming traffic, thereby reducing wait times at lights. Landscaped medians were also added to beautify the area and encourage pedestrian use of designated crosswalks.
Justin Powell, Secretary of Transportation, said: “These two projects are examples of the work we are doing at SCDOT to enhance mobility and revitalize our roadways. Safety is our number one priority and we are happy to announce the completion of these two projects that showcase our dedication to keep road users safe.”
To mark the completion of these projects, SCDOT organized a walking tour today.
