The body of Reverend Jesse Jackson Sr. will lie in state at the South Carolina Statehouse on Monday, March 2, 2026. This decision was made following a request from the Jackson family and several members of the South Carolina General Assembly. The family’s letter requesting this honor has been made available to the public.

Governor Henry McMaster has ordered that flags atop the Statehouse be lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset on that day in memory of Reverend Jackson. “Governor Henry McMaster has directed that the flags atop the Statehouse be lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset that same day to honor the legacy and memory of Reverend Jackson,” according to a statement released by his office.

The South Carolina Department of Administration is working with representatives from the Jackson family to organize arrangements for this event. Additional details will be announced soon.

Governor McMaster, who began serving as South Carolina’s 117th governor in January 2017 and won re-election in both 2018 and 2022, holds authority over state governance and policy oversight as chief executive, as outlined on the official website. His priorities have included economic development, public safety, education, and heritage preservation. The governor’s official office is located at the State House on Gervais Street in Columbia.
