The average travel time to get to work in Orangeburg is now 29.1 minutes, making it the worst city for commuting in South Carolina, according to a new analysis from the insurance comparison website Insurify.

The Insurify analysis ranked the city in each state with the worst commuting conditions, based on traffic patterns, municipal congestion levels and driving infraction rates. Only Rhode Island was not included in the study due to insufficient municipal data.

Cities were assigned a commute difficulty score, based on a zero-to-100 scale, with higher scores indicating more difficult commuting conditions. Orangeburg earned a commute difficulty score of 59.2, which was 52% higher than the state average.

Among the 870 U.S. cities analyzed in the study, the average difficulty score was 27. And the average time to commute to work nationwide is 22.8 minutes, according to Census Bureau data.

Researchers expect commute times to go up in 2021 as more people go back to their workplaces and do less telecommuting in the wake of people getting the coronavirus vaccination.
