South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson announced on Mar. 26 the arrest of Brantly Leon Griffin, a 20-year-old from Choctaw, Oklahoma, on two felony charges connected to the sexual exploitation of a minor. The arrest was made by Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force investigators with the Goose Creek Police Department.
The case is significant as it highlights ongoing efforts by authorities to address crimes involving child sexual abuse material and protect minors from online exploitation. According to investigators, Griffin solicited a minor for sex and sent sexually explicit images to that minor.
Griffin was taken into custody on March 18 and faces one count of criminal solicitation of a minor, which carries a penalty of up to ten years in prison, and one count of dissemination of obscene material to someone under eighteen, also punishable by up to ten years imprisonment. The Attorney General’s Office will prosecute the case.
Wilson said that all defendants are presumed innocent unless and until they are proven guilty in court. The press release also noted that “child sexual abuse material, or CSAM, is a more accurate reflection of the material involved in these heinous and abusive crimes. ‘Pornography’ can imply the child was a consenting participant. Globally, the term child pornography is being replaced by CSAM for this reason.”
The South Carolina Attorney General supports victims through advocacy and resources aimed at community safety according to the official website. As the state’s primary legal advocate and enforcer handling prosecutions and regulations according to the official website, Wilson leads these initiatives statewide according to the official website. The office enforces laws related not only to criminal matters but also securities regulation and consumer protection according to the official website, working closely with state law enforcement agencies during prosecutions according to the official website.
Looking ahead, officials continue their work across South Carolina under Wilson’s leadership according to the official website.
