Antonio Salazar Munos, a 23-year-old resident of Columbus, Ohio, has been sentenced to two and a half years in federal prison for assaulting a dating partner by suffocation. The sentencing was handed down by United States District Judge Richard M. Gergel.
According to the investigation, the incident occurred in April 2023 during a three-day cruise departing from Charleston, South Carolina. Munos traveled with the victim and other family members on board the Carnival Sunshine. Evidence indicated that Munos physically assaulted the victim at several locations on the ship before returning to their cabin, where he proceeded to sexually and physically assault her.
The victim reported the incident to Carnival Sunshine’s onboard security team. The security team investigated and subsequently notified the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
Munos was sentenced to 30 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release. There is no possibility of parole in the federal system.
The case was investigated by the FBI Columbia Field Office and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Whit Sowards.
