University of South Carolina defensive tackle Nick Barrett was selected by the Los Angeles Chargers with the fifth pick in the fifth round of the 2026 NFL Draft on April 25. Barrett became the second Gamecock player chosen in this year’s draft and was the 145th overall selection.
Barrett’s selection highlights his achievements during his five-year career at South Carolina, where he played in 51 games and started 12 times. He recorded a total of 72 tackles for the Gamecocks.
In his final season, Barrett served as a Rex Enright permanent team captain and shared both the Steve Wadiak Team MVP Award and Most Outstanding Senior Award. He also received recognition from coaches with awards for strength and conditioning as well as nutrition. In 2025, he led all Carolina defensive linemen with 42 tackles, including six tackles for loss and two sacks while starting every game that season.
Barrett is notable as the first Gamecock to be drafted by the Chargers since Kyle Kennard was picked in the fourth round last year. His selection continues a recent trend for South Carolina defensive tackles entering professional football; over four consecutive years, Zacch Pickens (2023), T.J. Sanders (2025), Tonka Hemingway (2025), and now Barrett have all been drafted into the National Football League.
Barrett’s transition to professional football will be watched closely by fans familiar with his collegiate performance.
