Head Coach Marty Richter announced on May 6 that Zach Johnson will join the South Carolina Upstate Spartans men’s basketball signing class for the 2026-27 season. Johnson, originally from Southern Pines, North Carolina, spent his freshman year at the University of Central Florida where he appeared in 13 games.

The announcement highlights Johnson’s return to the Carolinas and notes his previous performance at IVGreatness Academy, where he scored more than 25 points in games. Standing at six feet six inches tall, Johnson is expected to compete in the Big South league and contribute both offensively and defensively. During his time at IVGreatness Academy, he averaged six rebounds and five assists per game.

Richter said about Johnson: “Zach brings high major experience and size to our roster this season. He shoots the ball at an extremely high level and has an understanding of what it takes to prepare to win having come from Coach Dawkins and the UCF program.”

Johnson is set to join the team as they report for preparations in June. The coaching staff expects that his skills on court and determination will help move forward what they describe as a new era under Richter’s leadership.

The addition of players like Johnson signals continued efforts by South Carolina Upstate Spartans men’s basketball program to strengthen its roster ahead of future seasons.
