U.S. Senator Tim Scott, alongside Senator Lindsey Graham and Congressman Ralph Norman, has called on President Donald Trump to award Major James Capers, Jr. the Medal of Honor. The request comes in recognition of Major Capers’ acts of valor during a 1967 mission in Phu Loc, Vietnam.
Senator Scott emphasized Major Capers’ journey from humble beginnings to becoming “an American hero,” highlighting his sacrifice and selflessness. Senator Graham praised Capers as an inspiration to all Marines for his distinguished service.
Congressman Norman referred to Capers as a legend, noting his remarkable life experiences and character. Congressman Joe Wilson described Capers as a hero whose battlefield actions deserve America’s highest military honor.
Congresswoman Nancy Mace stated that honoring Major Capers reaffirms the nation’s commitment to those who defend its freedoms. Congresswoman Sheri Biggs echoed this sentiment, urging recognition for Capers’ bravery and leadership.
Major Capers’ military career includes over 50 classified missions in Vietnam and several commendations such as three Purple Hearts and the Silver Star. He also became the first African American in the Marine Corps’ Force Recon unit.
Now residing in North Carolina at age 85, Major Capers continues to mentor young Marines.
