Governor Henry McMaster has appointed Jeffery F. Stephens as the new sheriff of Spartanburg County. This decision follows the resignation of Sheriff Chuck Wright. The appointment was formalized through Executive Order 2025-18.
According to state law, a special election is required if a vacancy occurs more than one year before the next general election. Stephens will hold the position until a new sheriff is elected in this special election scheduled for later this year.
Stephens, a resident of Boiling Springs, S.C., has been with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office since 2011, serving as Chief Deputy. His career in law enforcement spans several decades, beginning in 1980 with the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office and including service with the Spartanburg Police Department. He also spent 25 years with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, ultimately becoming Commander of the Northern Command and overseeing operations across 23 counties in Upstate South Carolina.
