South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson announced the arrest of Demetrias Antonio Roberts, a 41-year-old resident of Irmo, on charges related to the exploitation of a vulnerable adult. The arrest was made by the office’s Vulnerable Adults and Medicaid Provider Fraud unit (VAMPF).

According to investigators, between July 18, 2025, and November 13, 2025, Roberts exploited a nursing home resident for personal financial gain. While acting as the victim’s power of attorney, Roberts allegedly accessed the individual’s bank account and made unauthorized withdrawals and purchases totaling approximately $14,862.90. Authorities stated that these transactions were used solely for Roberts’ benefit and did not help the victim.

The alleged exploitation occurred while the victim was living in a nursing home in Irmo and was legally classified as a vulnerable adult under South Carolina law.

Roberts was booked into Lexington County Detention Center on February 19, 2026. The case will be prosecuted by the Attorney General’s Office.

Attorney General Wilson emphasized due process: “All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until they are proven guilty in a court of law.”

The VAMPF unit has authority over Medicaid provider fraud as well as abuse or exploitation involving individuals in assisted living facilities or nursing homes. The South Carolina Medicaid Fraud Control Unit (VAMPF) receives most of its funding from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services through a federal grant; for fiscal year 2026, this amounts to $2,964,287 from federal sources with an additional $988,096 provided by South Carolina.

The South Carolina Attorney General’s office serves as the state’s main legal advocate and enforcer, handling prosecutions across various domains including securities regulation and consumer protection. The office also works closely with state law enforcement agencies and solicitors on criminal cases throughout South Carolina (official website). Alan Wilson has led this statewide operation as Attorney General (official website), which also supports victims through advocacy resources aimed at community safety (official website).
