The Southern Company Peach Bowl Challenge charity golf tournament was canceled on April 28 after inclement weather made play impossible. The event, held at Reynolds Lake Oconee near Atlanta, was called off after only three holes due to heavy rainfall and unplayable conditions.

Despite the cancellation, the $312,000 charity purse will still be distributed among the 26 current and former head coaches who participated. Each coach will receive $12,000 for a charity of their choice. The list of recipients includes Shane Beamer (Beamer Family Foundation), Mack Brown (MJ&M), Manny Diaz (Durham Public Schools Foundation), Dave Doeren (One Pack Empowered), Randy Edsall (Edsall Family Foundation), P.J. Fleck (Row the Boat Fleck Family Fund), Hugh Freeze (Freeze Family and Friends), Chan Gailey (Fellowship of Christian Athletes – Georgia Region), Jim Grobe (Fisher DeBerry Foundation), Paul Johnson (Paul and Susan Johnson Family Foundation), Brent Key (Key Family Foundation), Dan Lanning (OHSU Foundation – Knight Cancer Institute), Rhett Lashlee (ED29 Foundation), Gus Malzahn (Malzahn Family Foundation), Urban Meyer (Urban and Shelley Meyer Family Foundation), Jeff Monken (Jeff and Aubrey Beth Monken Family Foundation), Pat Narduzzi (UPMC Children’s Hospital Foundation), Mike Norvell (Keep Climbing Family Foundation), Houston Nutt (Chickasaw Foundation), Ted Roof (Breakthru House), Scott Satterfield (City Gospel Mission), Kirby Smart (Kirby Smart Family Foundation), Steve Spurrier (HBC Foundation), Dabo Swinney All In) All InFoundation, Tommy Tuberville Tommy Tuberville) Tommy TubervilleFoundation, Kyle Whittingham Guadalupe Center).

Peach Bowl, Inc. CEO and President Gary Stokan said: “We really tried to get the full tournament in, but mother nature had other plans. Even though the weather didn’t cooperate this year, the event was still a success at the end of the day as we raised $312,000 for 26 different charities.”

Since its creation in 2007, organizers say that the event has now contributed a total of $10.3 million in scholarship and charity support.

The outcome means that even with unforeseen setbacks like severe weather conditions affecting events such as this tournament, charitable giving continues to be prioritized.
