Homanit, a prominent wood materials manufacturer headquartered in Germany, has announced its decision to establish a manufacturing operation in Clarendon County, South Carolina. The investment of $250 million is projected to create 300 new jobs. Homanit specializes in producing medium- and high-density wood fiberboards used across furniture, automotive, door, and coating industries globally.
The company’s new facility will be located at 1200 Spigner Road in Alcolu and aims to cater to U.S.-based customers with production expected to commence by 2028. The Coordinating Council for Economic Development has approved job development credits for the project.
Fritz Homann, Homanit’s Managing Director, expressed gratitude towards the community support from Clarendon County and South Carolina’s infrastructure as pivotal reasons for choosing the location. Governor Henry McMaster highlighted the significance of this investment for South Carolina’s workforce and economy. Secretary of Commerce Harry M. Lightsey III remarked on the confidence this project shows in the state’s forestry and manufacturing sectors.
Commissioner of Agriculture Hugh Weathers welcomed Homanit as part of South Carolina’s agribusiness industry while State Forester Scott Phillips noted the impact on local timber markets. Clarendon County Council Chairman John E. Johnson III extended a warm welcome to Homanit on behalf of the council, emphasizing the long-term economic benefits.
Matthew Shaffer from Central SC Alliance pointed out that international companies are increasingly selecting central South Carolina due to its resources and skilled workforce.
