The Citadel defeated the University of North Carolina at Greensboro 2-1 on April 24 in the first game of a three-game Southern Conference baseball series at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

The matchup was marked by strong pitching performances from Will Holmes and Michael Gibson, who combined for 14 strikeouts. Holmes started for The Citadel, throwing six and two-thirds innings with nine strikeouts while allowing just two hits, one run, and three walks. Gibson finished the final two and one-third innings, striking out five batters to earn his fifth save of the season.

Offensively, Gibson also contributed as designated hitter with two hits—including a double—and scored the go-ahead run in the second inning. Christian Stratis added an infield single and scored a run, while Lane Tobin recorded The Citadel’s only RBI with a sacrifice fly that brought Stratis home during a bases-loaded situation.

For UNCG, Jacob Dilley collected two hits and JJ Parsons drove in their only run on a seventh-inning walk. Starting pitcher Noah Chapman threw eight complete innings for UNCG with nine strikeouts but allowed both earned runs on three hits.

The victory puts The Citadel at an overall record of 20-21 (5-8 Southern Conference), while UNCG falls to 15-27 (2-11). The series continues Saturday afternoon at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
