Hampton Lumber, a family-owned producer of sustainable building materials, has announced plans to establish its first East Coast sawmill in Allendale County, South Carolina. The Oregon-based company will invest $225 million in the new facility, which is expected to create at least 125 jobs.
The new lumber mill will cover 375,000 square feet and will be located at Highway 321 and Barker Mill Pond Road in Fairfax. It will focus on producing Southern Yellow Pine framing lumber. Operations are anticipated to begin in 2027.
The Coordinating Council for Economic Development has approved job development credits for the project. Hampton Lumber CEO Randy Schillinger expressed gratitude for the support from state and local communities, stating that it helped solidify their decision to choose this location.
Governor Henry McMaster welcomed the company’s investment, highlighting its potential impact on South Carolina’s forestry industry and local economy. Secretary of Commerce Harry M. Lightsey III emphasized the significance of this development for rural communities in the state.
Commissioner of Agriculture Hugh Weathers noted that the investment would benefit timber farmers and provide quality jobs in a largely rural area. State Forester Scott Phillips remarked on Hampton Lumber’s confidence in South Carolina’s sustainably managed forests and workforce.
Local leaders also expressed their support for the project. Allendale County Council Chairman Bill Robinson highlighted the positive impact on families, while SouthernCarolina Alliance Chairman Marty Sauls appreciated the economic opportunities it would bring to the region. Fairfax Mayor Albert “Butch” Sauls thanked Hampton Lumber for committing to bringing new jobs to their community.
