In a recent letter to the editor of The Wall Street Journal, U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham expressed strong sentiments regarding the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. He addressed an editorial titled “A Sanctions Message to Putin—and China” published on May 21.

Senator Graham emphasized President Trump’s efforts in fostering peace between Ukraine and Russia, highlighting the importance of global stability. He noted that America’s withdrawal from Afghanistan had negative repercussions on its international reputation and suggested that decisive leadership could change this perception by ending the conflict in Ukraine.

Graham pointed out that while Ukraine is ready for peace, Russia has been uncooperative. He mentioned President Trump’s request for Russian President Vladimir Putin to provide terms for a cease-fire, which would clarify the obstacles to achieving peace.

The senator also discussed his collaboration with the White House on a sanctions bill against Russia. This legislation aims to impose significant tariffs on countries purchasing Russian energy products, effectively isolating Russia economically. Graham argued that if major buyers like China or India ceased their purchases, it would significantly impact Russia’s ability to sustain its military operations.

The sanctions bill has garnered support from 82 co-sponsors in the Senate. Senator John Thune recently stated that if Putin continues his current course of action, the Senate will respond accordingly. Graham concluded by expressing hope for a positive outcome but warned of potential challenges ahead with Russia’s leadership.
