Governor Henry McMaster has suspended Williamsburg County Treasurer Margaret Kimber W. Cooper following her indictment. The governor issued Executive Order 2025-37, which removes Cooper from office and names Pearl R. Brown as the interim Williamsburg County Treasurer.
According to the order, Brown will hold the position until one of several events occurs: Cooper is either acquitted or convicted, the indictment is resolved in another manner, or a new treasurer is elected and qualifies for the role under state law.
Brown is a longtime resident of Williamsburg County and previously served as county treasurer for 26 years before retiring in 2011.
