Governor Henry McMaster has suspended Bethune Town Councilman John Anthony Heflin from office following Heflin’s indictment. The suspension was enacted through Executive Order 2025-28.

According to the governor’s office, Heflin will remain suspended until he is either acquitted, convicted, or a successor is elected and qualifies as outlined by law.

“Following the indictment of Bethune Town Councilman John Anthony Heflin, Governor Henry McMaster today issued Executive Order 2025-28, suspending Heflin from office,” the statement read.

Heflin’s suspension will continue under these terms unless further legal or electoral developments occur.
