Governor Henry McMaster of South Carolina has filed an amicus curiae brief in the case of Medina v. Planned Parenthood. The case centers on South Carolina’s decision to exclude abortion providers, such as Planned Parenthood, from its Medicaid program. Governor McMaster emphasized the state’s right to implement policies that align with its values.
“This case is about protecting the sanctity of life and preserving South Carolina’s right to govern itself in a way that reflects the values of its people,” stated Governor McMaster. He further added, “South Carolina has made it clear that we value the right to life. Therefore, taxpayers should not be forced to subsidize abortion providers who are in direct opposition to their beliefs.”
The legal dispute traces back to a 2018 Executive Order by Governor McMaster, which instructed the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services to remove abortion clinics from the state’s Medicaid provider list. In December 2024, the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to hear this case, with oral arguments anticipated in late March or April.
