Governor Henry McMaster has declared a State of Emergency in South Carolina in anticipation of the potential effects of Tropical Disturbance 94L. Executive Order 2025-33 activates the South Carolina Emergency Operations Plan and directs the South Carolina Emergency Management Division (SCEMD) to coordinate preparation efforts with local, state, and federal agencies. The order also makes state and local agencies eligible for Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) reimbursement for expenses related to the storm.
“As this storm approaches our coast, I am issuing a State of Emergency to ensure Team South Carolina is able to access and deploy the resources and personnel needed to prepare for and respond to this storm,” said Governor Henry McMaster. “While the storm’s arrival, speed, and intensity remain hard to predict, we do know that it will bring significant wind, heavy rainfall, and flooding across the ENTIRE state of South Carolina. We have seen this before. Now is the time to start paying attention to forecasts, updates, and alerts from official sources and begin making preparations.”
The National Hurricane Center reports that Tropical Disturbance 94L is currently near Hispaniola, the Turks and Caicos Islands, and eastern Cuba. The disturbance is expected to strengthen into a tropical storm over the weekend. The precise path remains uncertain, but forecasters warn of possible wind, heavy rain, and storm surge affecting coastal regions.
Residents and visitors in areas that could be affected are encouraged to review their hurricane plans and monitor updates from local news outlets and the National Hurricane Center. SCEMD provides several resources for hurricane preparedness, including an interactive tool at hurricane.sc and the 2025 S.C. Hurricane Guide available in both English and Spanish at scemd.org.
South Carolinians in potentially impacted areas are reminded to stay alert for official updates and take necessary precautions.
