Governor Henry McMaster appointed Russell “Patrick” Davis as South Carolina’s Poet Laureate on Mar. 19, according to an official announcement.
The appointment highlights the state’s commitment to promoting its cultural heritage and supporting the arts. The Poet Laureate position, established by the General Assembly in 1934, is intended to encourage poetry throughout South Carolina and involves participation in public programming.
“Throughout his career, Patrick Davis has used music and words to tell the stories of our people, and we are proud to have him represent South Carolina’s rich heritage,” Governor Henry McMaster said. “His deep South Carolina roots and talent as a songwriter and storyteller make him uniquely suited to serve as our state’s Poet Laureate.”
Davis was raised in Camden, South Carolina, and graduated from the University of South Carolina before building a career as a nationally recognized singer-songwriter and producer. He has collaborated with various artists, produced multiple albums, and maintained strong ties to his home state through his music and performances.
