Georg Utz, Inc., a manufacturer of plastic containers, has announced plans to open its first operation in South Carolina. The company will invest approximately $40 million in a new facility in Sumter County, which is expected to create 50 jobs.
Georg Utz, Inc. is a subsidiary of the Switzerland-based Utz Group and was established in 2003. The company currently operates a manufacturing plant in Indiana and specializes in returnable plastic containers, pallets, component holders, and custom solutions. The new 90,000-square-foot facility will be built at Race Track Road and U.S. Highway 521 in Sumter and will produce rigid returnable packaging.

Sumter County received a $750,000 Closing Fund grant from the Coordinating Council for Economic Development to help cover site preparation costs as well as water, sewer, and rail improvements.
