The Furman University distance medley relay team set a new program record on April 24 during the Penn Relays at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The team, consisting of freshman Annie Miller, sophomore Claire Cook, sophomore Nysa Males, and senior Camryn Wennersten, finished with a time of 11:10.50 to secure eighth place and surpass the previous school record by more than a minute.
The previous Furman record for the event was 12:15.82 and had stood since April of 2000. In addition to their relay performance, several Furman athletes competed individually at the meet. Wennersten placed seventeenth in the women’s 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:17.49. Miller finished thirty-first in the same event at 4:21.24 while Males came in thirty-seventh with a time of 4:23.30.
In other events, Jais Ward achieved a personal best in the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:25.06 and moved up to thirty-eighth on the NCAA East region qualifying list for that discipline. Freshman Tessa Walter competed in the women’s 5,000 meters and finished thirty-eighth after recording her own personal best of 16:36.95.
The Penn Relays is considered one of track and field’s most historic competitions worldwide and this year drew over one hundred thousand spectators who watched more than seventeen thousand athletes participate across youth, high school, Special Olympics, collegiate, masters and Olympic Development categories.
