Freshman pitcher Carter Harrington allowed two runs over seven innings as the College of Charleston baseball team defeated the University of North Carolina Wilmington, 6-2, on May 1 at Brooks Field.
The win brings College of Charleston’s record to 21-23 overall and 11-11 in conference play. The Seahawks now stand at 25-19 overall and 13-9 in league games.
Charleston took an early lead with a pair of two-run singles in the second inning. Freshman Nick Diaz singled to center field, bringing home redshirt senior Ethan Plyler and redshirt junior Braeden Smith. Diaz later scored on freshman Jake Amman’s two-run single. Harrington limited UNCW to just one hit through the first five innings.
The Cougars added insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings with a sacrifice fly from sophomore Landon Penfield and an RBI single by sophomore Alex LaCoste. Harrington finished his outing allowing only four hits while striking out four batters. Redshirt senior Alex Lyon pitched the final two innings, facing just one batter over the minimum.
Plyler went three-for-four at the plate with a walk and scored twice for Charleston, while Diaz reached base in all four appearances. Lyon made his 95th career relief appearance, tying Carter Love for most in school history. The teams will meet again Saturday evening for game two of their series.
