South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson has announced the arrest of Matheus Robert Gokey, a 24-year-old resident of Florence, South Carolina, on charges related to the sexual exploitation of a minor. The arrest was carried out by investigators from the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force within the Attorney General’s Office. The Florence Police Department and the Naugatuck Police Department in Connecticut also assisted with the investigation.
According to investigators, Gokey is accused of possessing files containing child sexual abuse material. He was taken into custody on November 6, 2025.
Gokey faces three counts of third-degree sexual exploitation of a minor under South Carolina law (§16-15-410). Each count is classified as a felony and carries a potential sentence of up to ten years in prison.
The Attorney General’s Office will handle prosecution for this case.
Attorney General Wilson stated, “All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until they are proven guilty in a court of law.”
The term “child sexual abuse material” (CSAM) is used to more accurately describe content involved in these crimes. Officials note that using “pornography” can wrongly suggest consent by minors; therefore, CSAM is increasingly replacing the term “child pornography” worldwide for clarity.
