City of Myrtle Beach issued the following announcement on September 9.

Myrtle Beach will recognize the 20th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks with a ceremony at Warbird Park, the new home to the 9/11 Unity Memorial, at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, September 11. The public is invited to attend. The memorial was moved to Warbird Park from 29th Avenue North. In addition to a piece of steel beam from the North Tower of the World Trade Center, it includes the following timeline of events, engraved in granite in circles surrounding the memorial.

September 11, 2001, began as an idyllic day along the East Coast. Blue skies and pleasant temperatures held the promise of a beautiful day, but as millions of Americans began their morning, four airplanes – American Airlines Flight 11, United Airlines Flight 175, American Airlines Flight 77, and United Airlines Flight 93 – were hijacked by Islamic extremists, setting in motion the deadliest attacks ever on American soil.

8:19 a.m. – 9:28 a.m.: Four planes, American Airlines Flight 11, American Airlines Flight 77, United Airlines Flight 175 and American Airlines Flight 175 – are hijacked.

8:46:30: American Airlines Flight 11 crashes at roughly 466 m.p.h. into the north face of the North Tower of the World Trade Center, between floors 93 and 99.

9:03: United Flight 175 crashes at about 590 m.p.h. into the south face of the South Tower of the World Trade Center, between floors 77 and 85.

9:37: American Airlines Flight 77 crashes into the western side of the Pentagon and starts a violent fire.

9:59: The South Tower of the World Trade Center begins to collapse, 56 minutes and 2 second after the impact of Flight 175. Its destruction is viewed and heard by a vast television and radio audience.

10:03: United Airlines Flight 93 is crashed by its hijackers and passengers, due to fighting in the cockpit 80 miles southeast of Pittsburgh in Somerset County, Pa.

10:28:25: The North Tower of the World Trade Center begins to collapse. The second collapse is also viewed live on television and heard on radio. The North Tower collapses 1 hour, 41 minutes and 45 seconds after the impact of Flight 11.

10:50:19: Five stories of part of the Pentagon collapse due to the fire.

5:20: 7 World Trade Center, a 47-story building, collapses. Due to the emergency personnel having enough time to evacuate the building since the collapse of the North Tower, there are no injuries or deaths as a result of the collapse.

2,996 people died as a result of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Included among the dead were 343 FDNY firefighters, who rushed to the scene of the attacks in New York City and save countless lives.
