Chattanooga swept a Southern Conference softball doubleheader against Furman on May 2, winning the first game 9-0 and the second game 7-6 in extra innings at Frost Stadium.
The games were important for both teams as they neared the end of their regular season schedules. Chattanooga improved its record to 21-27 overall and 9-11 in conference play, while Furman fell to 13-38 overall and 5-15 in the conference.
In the opening game, Taylor Long pitched a complete game shutout for Chattanooga, allowing only two hits and striking out six batters. The Mocs took an early lead with Jade Gainer’s home run in the second inning and expanded it through consistent offense, including a four-run fourth inning highlighted by Chloe Lackey’s RBI double. Baileigh Pitts ended the contest with a two-run home run that triggered the mercy rule after six innings. Kristyn Embler started for Furman but allowed five earned runs over three-plus innings.
The second game was closely contested, going into extra innings after Furman rallied to tie it with three runs in the seventh inning. Raven Jones delivered a walk-off single up the middle in the bottom of the tenth inning to secure Chattanooga’s sweep. Long also earned her second pitching win of the day by holding Furman to one earned run over nearly six innings of relief work. Annika Segedi had three hits for Chattanooga, while Embler and Katie Peeler each went three-for-five for Furman.
