Charleston Southern lost its last road nonconference baseball game of the season on April 28, falling to Georgia Southern by a score of 18-4.
The outcome concludes Charleston Southern’s away nonconference schedule for the year. The team was unable to overcome an early deficit after scoring first in the opening inning.
Charleston Southern started strong with Garrison Barile driving in a run on a groundout in the top of the first inning. However, Georgia Southern responded with four runs in their half of the inning and continued their momentum by adding two more runs in the third and five more in the fourth, bringing their lead to 11-1. In the sixth inning, Charleston Southern managed three runs through a sacrifice fly from Barile and RBI singles from Alex Marot and Chandler Tuupo. Despite this effort, Georgia Southern scored seven more runs in the bottom of that frame, pushing their advantage to 18-4. The Buccaneers did not score again as the game ended after seven innings.
Barile led Charleston Southern at bat with two RBIs out of four total team hits. Five pitchers took turns on the mound for Charleston Southern; Tristan Stephenson was notable for being the only pitcher who did not allow any runs during his appearance as he threw a scoreless sixth inning.
With this loss behind them, Charleston Southern will take a week off from games so student-athletes can focus on final exams. The team is scheduled to return home for a matchup against College of Charleston on May 5 at 6 p.m., followed by an away series at Longwood from May 8-10 and then home games against Radford from May 14-16. Only six teams will qualify for participation in this year’s Big South Championships set for Asheville between May 20 and May 23.
