The College of Charleston baseball team will begin an eight-game road trip against the University of North Carolina Wilmington from May 1 to May 3, with games scheduled for 6 p.m., 4 p.m., and 2 p.m.
This stretch marks the team’s longest series of consecutive away games since April and May of 2021. The Cougars enter the weekend after being swept by Campbell but had previously won nine out of their last thirteen games in April. Graduate player Dylan Johnson led the team during this period, batting .439 with fifteen runs scored, five extra-base hits, thirteen runs batted in, and a 1.125 on-base plus slugging percentage. Sophomore Alex LaCoste also contributed significantly with thirteen runs batted in and a .350 batting average for the month.
Redshirt senior Alex Lyon is set to tie Carter Love’s program record for most relief appearances if he takes the mound this weekend, reaching ninety-five outings. Lyon recorded a 1.69 earned run average over sixteen innings pitched in April across five appearances and struck out eleven batters. His performance included a career-high five strikeouts over a college-best five and two-thirds innings against Campbell on April 26.
In their series history against UNCW, Charleston holds a record of twenty-six wins to twenty-eight losses. Earlier this season in March, UNCW took two out of three games when they played at Patriots Point; however, Charleston won the series finale six to three on March 22 behind Johnson’s two-for-three day at bat that included a double, home run, and three runs batted in.
After concluding their road trip at UNCW, Charleston will travel up I-26 to face Charleston Southern on May 5 for another away game scheduled at Nielsen Field.
