Charleston County School District announced on May 4 that four first-year teachers have been named the district’s 2026 Rookie Teachers of the Year.
The awards recognize outstanding new educators at the early childhood, elementary, middle, and high school levels. The recipients are Kaitlin Ashby from Drayton Hall Elementary School (Primary), Allison “Allie” Zaubi from North Charleston Creative Arts Elementary School (Elementary), Collin Sitton from Morningside Middle School (Middle), and Shannon Broussard from R.B. Stall High School (High).
Each teacher was nominated by their principal for demonstrating qualities that reflect the district’s vision for exceptional teaching. After nomination, candidates submitted essays describing how they would meet student and family needs. A panel of veteran educators reviewed these applications to select the top rookie teachers.
“To be recognized as an outstanding first-year teacher is a remarkable achievement,” said Superintendent Anita Huggins. “Our rookie teachers bring fresh energy, passion, and dedication to our classrooms each day. They are not only an asset to our district but also a powerful reminder of the bright future of the teaching profession.”
This year, a total of 41 first-year teachers were nominated across Charleston County schools. Gayle Morris, Executive Director of Educator Effectiveness and Leadership Development, said: “In our work through the Induction and Mentoring Program, it is incredibly rewarding to see beginning teachers grow into outstanding educators and emerging leaders. I could not be more proud to honor the four recipients of the Rookie Teacher of the Year award. New teachers navigate many challenges in their first years, and it is a privilege to recognize their success. We look forward to the lasting impact they will continue to make across the district as they grow in the profession.”
