South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson announced the arrest of Robin C. Hatley, a 61-year-old caregiver from Laurens, S.C., for allegedly abusing a vulnerable adult. The incident reportedly occurred on June 14, 2025, at Pearl at Five Forks Memory Care Center in Simpsonville, S.C., where Hatley was employed.
The Vulnerable Adults and Medicaid Provider Fraud unit (VAMPF) conducted a joint investigation with the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office. They allege that Hatley struck a resident multiple times on the head, face, and nose. The victim is classified as a vulnerable adult under South Carolina law.
Pearl at Five Forks Memory Care Center reported the incident to law enforcement and cooperated with investigators. The case will be prosecuted by the Attorney General’s Office.
Abuse of a Vulnerable Adult is considered a felony in South Carolina and carries penalties of up to five years in prison or fines up to $5,000 upon conviction.
Attorney General Wilson noted that all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
VAMPF operates under federal regulations with authority over Medicaid provider fraud and abuse cases involving beneficiaries or residents of assisted living facilities or nursing homes. It receives 75 percent of its funding from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services through a grant totaling $2,889,252 for fiscal year 2025. The remaining funds come from South Carolina.
