Boston College defeated Clemson 8-4 on May 2 to open their Atlantic Coast Conference baseball series at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
The result leaves Clemson with two games remaining in the regular season, needing both wins to take the series. Boston College scored in three of the first five innings and never let Clemson close the gap. The Tigers went hitless with runners in scoring position, leaving six men on base and failing to score a single run when it mattered most.
Clemson’s starting pitcher Dane Moehler was pulled after just 1.2 innings and three earned runs as he continues his recovery from Tommy John surgery. Boston College capitalized early, with Nick Wang hitting a solo home run in the first inning and adding more runs off doubles by Danny Surowiec and Ben Williams. Justin LeGuernic relieved Moehler but could not prevent further scoring, as Boston College built a four-run lead before Clemson had batted three times.
Clemson managed two unearned runs in the second inning following an error by Boston College’s third baseman but failed to generate offense beyond that point. Jacob Jarrell provided a highlight for Clemson fans with his 17th home run of the season, narrowing the deficit to two runs in the fifth inning. However, Clemson finished without any hits with runners in scoring position across nine innings.
LeGuernic pitched well out of relief for Clemson, striking out six over 5.1 innings while limiting further damage from Boston College’s lineup. For Boston College, A.J. Colarusso struck out eight batters over six innings while Cesar Gonzalez closed out the final three frames without allowing a hit.
Boston College added two more runs late against an overworked bullpen as errors continued to hurt Clemson’s chances for a comeback. The teams will meet again Saturday at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
