U.S. Senators Tim Scott and Maggie Hassan have reintroduced the Creating Opportunity for Athletic Coaches to Help Educate Students (COACHES) Act. This legislation aims to amend the tax code, allowing K-12 coaches to be classified as “eligible educators.” This classification would enable them to qualify for tax deductions on certain out-of-pocket instructional expenses.

Senator Scott emphasized the impact of coaches in students’ lives, stating, “I know from personal experience how coaches can play a vital role in shaping students’ success academically and beyond by offering mentorship and life lessons that resonate for years to come.” He expressed his honor in introducing legislation that acknowledges and supports these educators.

Senator Hassan highlighted the significance of coaches and athletic administrators in New Hampshire, saying, “Coaches and athletic administrators play an important role in the lives of Granite State students, teaching life lessons that are important on and off the field.” She noted that this bipartisan legislation would provide tax relief for expenses incurred by these individuals while supporting student athletes.

The COACHES Act has garnered support from major sports organizations including the National Football League, Major League Baseball, the National Basketball Association, the National Hockey League, and Major League Soccer.
