South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson has initiated an inquiry into recent natural gas price increases by the Clinton Newberry Natural Gas Authority (CNNGA). The move comes after a series of complaints from residents who reported significant rises in their gas bills following severe winter weather.

“Our office received a number of complaints from constituents regarding the recent price increases as a consequence of the severe weather events occurring this winter,” Attorney General Alan Wilson stated. “In light of the numerous complaints, CNNGA’s decision to increase natural gas rates needs to be better understood.”

The letter sent by Wilson outlines concerns from customers served by CNNGA, many of whom were surprised by higher-than-expected charges on their latest bills. The Attorney General is seeking clarification from the utility about its rate-setting process, specifically regarding how supply disruptions and increased demand influenced its decision.

As South Carolina’s chief legal advocate and regulator, the Attorney General’s office oversees consumer protection matters across the state and enforces laws related to utilities and other regulated industries. The office also works with law enforcement and solicitors on prosecutions, supports victims of crime, and provides resources for community safety, according to information available on its official website.

Alan Wilson has led the South Carolina Attorney General’s office in these regulatory and advocacy efforts statewide. The agency continues to play a role in protecting consumers through oversight of entities like CNNGA.

The public can access more details about this inquiry or read the full letter sent to CNNGA on the official channels provided by the Attorney General’s office.
