Attorney General Alan Wilson has assigned Melody Brown, a senior attorney from the Capital & Collateral Litigation Section of his office, to the Fifth Circuit Solicitor’s Office. Brown will conduct a comprehensive review of the case related to the May 3, 2025, murder of Logan Federico.
Wilson stated, “Melody Brown is one of the most seasoned attorneys in our office, with extensive experience in cases warranting the death penalty. She will be reviewing the details of this case to ensure that every step forward is handled with the utmost precision and the highest standards of justice.”
Brown’s section handles responsibilities in death penalty cases beyond direct appeals. This includes post-conviction relief proceedings in circuit court and appeals up to both state and federal supreme courts, as well as federal habeas corpus litigation and any further actions challenging convictions or sentences.
The Attorney General’s office also plans to lead a full audit of defendant Alexander Devante Dickey’s criminal history and previous court proceedings. The audit will include an examination into why Dickey was not incarcerated at the time of Federico’s murder and what factors contributed to this situation.
A letter from Attorney General Wilson urged Solicitor Gipson to strongly consider filing a notice of intent to seek the death penalty. In response, Solicitor Gipson indicated his office could not yet make that decision while its own comprehensive evidence review continues.
Senior Assistant Deputy Attorney General Melody Brown will participate in this ongoing review process.
“We owe it to Logan Federico’s family, and to every family in South Carolina, to make sure justice is served,” said Wilson.
