South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson thanked the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Mar. 24 for unanimously advancing H.4611, known as the “Parental Leave for Stillbirth” Act, to the full House Ways and Means Committee.
The measure seeks to clarify state law so that parents who experience a stillbirth are eligible for paid parental leave, which is currently provided only after live births. This clarification is intended to ensure that families facing such tragedies receive equal support and benefits under state policy.
Wilson said in a statement, “I would like to thank the House Ways and Means Subcommittee for unanimously moving H.4611 to the full House Ways and Means Committee. Under current state law, a birth qualifies for paid parental leave. A stillbirth IS the birth of a child. Parents who endure this traumatic tragedy deserve the time, support, and benefits guaranteed under the law. This clarification of state law is necessary to ensure these families get the benefits they deserve.”
The South Carolina Attorney General supports victims of crime through advocacy and resources as part of its mission to contribute to community safety and protection, according to the official website. The office operates as South Carolina’s primary legal advocate and enforcer by handling prosecutions and regulatory matters across various sectors including securities and consumer protection according to its official website.
Alan Wilson has served as head of this statewide office according to its official website, working with law enforcement agencies throughout South Carolina on criminal prosecutions as noted by its official site.
The move by lawmakers reflects ongoing efforts within South Carolina government offices—such as those led by Wilson—to address gaps in existing laws affecting families during difficult times.
