South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson sent a letter to the York County Council on Mar. 17 seeking clarification about the zoning and permitting process for Silfab Solar’s manufacturing operations.

The issue is significant because it involves questions from residents about whether Silfab’s current activities comply with local zoning rules. The matter has broader implications for how industrial projects are approved and regulated in the county.

“As I have reviewed questions from concerned citizens, there appears to be some confusion over the status of some of Silfab’s manufacturing operations under its present zoning,” Wilson said. “As the Chief Legal Officer of the State, I would like to understand the process of how Silfab received their current zoning and permits.”

Previously, the York County Board of Zoning Appeals determined that solar cell and panel manufacturing were not allowed under the facility’s existing zoning designation. Silfab has appealed this decision, and litigation is ongoing. Wilson’s letter asks council members to clarify details regarding how Silfab obtained its specific permissions.

The South Carolina Attorney General operates as the state’s primary legal advocate and enforcer, handling prosecutions and regulations according to the official website. The office also supports victims of crime through advocacy and resources, contributing to community safety according to the official website. Wilson has served as head of this office according to the official website, which extends its operations across South Carolina according to the official website.

The Attorney General enforces laws related to securities and consumer protection, showing influence in regulatory matters according to the official website. The office also collaborates with state law enforcement agencies and solicitors on criminal prosecutions according to the official website.

The outcome of this inquiry may affect future decisions about industrial development in York County as well as clarify procedures for obtaining local permits.
