Redshirt senior Alex Lyon set a new program record with his 96th career relief appearance as the College of Charleston baseball team lost 9-6 to Charleston Southern at Nielsen Field on May 5.
Lyon’s achievement marks a significant milestone for the team, highlighting his consistent presence and durability throughout his college baseball career. The game also featured strong performances from several players despite the setback.
Freshman Jake Amman started the game with a home run to left field, marking his fourth of the season and becoming the first Cougar to hit a home run in the first inning this year. The Cougars tied the game at three runs apiece in the fourth inning, with RBI singles from redshirt senior Ethan Plyler and senior Payton Frehner. Sophomore Alex LaCoste contributed by hitting his seventh home run of the season in the fifth inning.
Charleston attempted a comeback late in the game, narrowing an 8-4 deficit to two runs during an eighth-inning rally led by Amman and LaCoste’s infield singles. LaCoste finished with two hits, two runs scored, two walks, and two RBI. Amman also had two hits in four at bats, scored twice, and drove in two runs. Plyler went three-for-five at bat and extended his hitting streak to six games.
Graduate Dylan Johnson threw out his 22nd runner of the year during this matchup, tying him for second-most runners thrown out in a single season for Charleston alongside Alex Garabedian (2009).
Charleston now holds a 65-19 all-time series lead over Charleston Southern. Next up for Charleston is a three-game series against Elon starting May 8.
