U.S. Senators Lindsey Graham and Thom Tillis, along with eight other Senators, have introduced the bipartisan Protect and Serve Act. The legislation aims to make knowingly causing or attempting to cause bodily injury to a law enforcement officer a federal crime.

Senator Graham expressed his support for the bill, stating, “I’m very pleased to support Senator Tillis’ legislation to protect our men and women in blue.” Senator Tillis emphasized the importance of protecting law enforcement officers, calling them heroes who risk their lives daily to safeguard communities.

The Protect and Serve Act has garnered support from various law enforcement organizations. Patrick Yoes, National President of the Fraternal Order of Police, highlighted that the legislation was drafted in response to the increasing number of targeted attacks on law enforcement officers.

Bill Johnson, Executive Director of the National Association of Police Organizations, pointed out the risks faced by law enforcement officers, citing a recent tragedy in Charlotte, North Carolina. He urged Congress to pass the Protect and Serve Act to ensure accountability for those who commit violence against officers.

Vincent Vallelong, President of the Sergeants Benevolent Association of the New York City Police Department, commended Senator Tillis for his leadership in advancing the critical officer safety measure. Megan Noland, Executive Director of the Major County Sheriffs of America, expressed pride in supporting the legislation to hold individuals who attack officers accountable.

The Protect and Serve Act, if enacted, would establish federal penalties for individuals who target law enforcement for assault and attacks, aiming to deter such crimes and provide justice for the brave officers who put their lives on the line every day.
