COLUMBIA, S.C. - South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson made a significant announcement regarding the arrest of Ronnelle Nance, a 54-year-old man from Washington, DC, in connection with a case of fraud against a vulnerable adult in Upstate SC.

Nance was arrested by the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit (SCMFCU) for charges including Exploitation of a Vulnerable Adult and Breach of Trust with Fraudulent Intent. These charges stem from allegations that Nance unlawfully used the funds, assets, and power-of-attorney of a vulnerable adult between May 6, 2021, and July 31, 2023, converting over $58,000 of the victim's money for personal gain while the victim resided at NHC Healthcare Mauldin, an assisted living facility.

The case, brought to light by NHC Healthcare Mauldin and investigated by SCMFCU, will be prosecuted by the Attorney General's Office. Upon conviction, the charges carry penalties of up to five years in prison, fines, or both for Exploitation of a Vulnerable Adult, and up to 10 years in prison, fines determined by the court, or both for Breach of Trust over $10,000.

Emphasizing the principle of innocence until proven guilty, Attorney General Wilson highlighted the seriousness of the allegations and the legal process that will follow.

The SCMFCU, responsible for investigating Medicaid provider fraud, abuse, and neglect of Medicaid beneficiaries, as well as exploitation of individuals in care facilities, receives funding from both federal and state sources to carry out its mission.

As the legal proceedings unfold, the case underscores the importance of protecting vulnerable adults and holding accountable those who exploit them.
