Senator Tim Scott addressed the U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, highlighting the challenges faced by Americans in achieving homeownership. During the hearing with U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Acting Secretary Adrianne Todman and Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) Director Sandra L. Thompson, Senator Scott emphasized the growing housing crisis in the country.

Senator Scott expressed concern over the increasing unaffordability of housing, stating, “The American Dream of homeownership is further out of reach today than it was just a few years ago.” He emphasized the importance of homeownership in closing the wealth gap and creating equity in the economy.

Pointing out the stagnation in homeownership rates for African Americans, Senator Scott highlighted the need for comprehensive reforms to federal housing policies. He criticized the Biden administration for prioritizing excessive spending, burdensome regulations, and far-Left climate initiatives over addressing the housing crisis.

Senator Scott raised alarm over the rising mortgage rates, rents, and homelessness levels under the current administration, noting the disconnect between its promises and policies on housing affordability. He criticized HUD and FHFA for imposing rent controls and politicized actions that could limit affordable housing supply.

Furthermore, Senator Scott voiced concerns about HUD’s proposed climate regulations that could significantly increase housing costs for low-income households. He also criticized HUD’s weak-on-crime policies, which could jeopardize community safety by allowing criminals to live in subsidized housing.

Senator Scott urged the committee to consider his housing legislation, the ROAD to Housing Act, which aims to address housing challenges by increasing supply, improving quality of life for families, and providing economic opportunities across the nation. He called for bipartisan support for his bill and emphasized the need for real solutions to tackle the housing crisis in America.

In conclusion, Senator Scott reiterated the importance of homeownership as a cornerstone of the American Dream and urged policymakers to prioritize housing reforms to ensure that all Americans have the opportunity to achieve this fundamental goal.
