COLUMBIA, S.C. – Governor Henry McMaster has announced the appointment of retired federal appellate judge Dennis W. Shedd of Irmo as the chairman of the South Carolina State Election Commission. The appointment comes following the resignation of former chairman John Wells of Lugoff, who served for five years.

In a statement, Governor McMaster emphasized the importance of election integrity, stating, "Maintaining the public's confidence in the integrity of our elections is of the utmost importance." He expressed confidence in Judge Shedd's abilities, highlighting, "As one of the most well-respected jurists in the country, Judge Shedd is uniquely qualified to lead the state election commission, and to ensure that South Carolinians can participate in free and fair elections. I'm grateful for his willingness to serve."

Judge Shedd, 71, brings a wealth of experience to his new role. He previously served as a U.S. District Judge for the District of South Carolina for 12 years, having been nominated by President George H.W. Bush. Following a nomination by President George W. Bush, Judge Shedd was confirmed by the U.S. Senate to the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals in 2002, where he served until his retirement in 2022. He holds educational degrees from Wofford College, the University of South Carolina, and Georgetown University.

The appointment of Judge Dennis W. Shedd as the chairman of the State Election Commission is effective immediately, marking a new chapter in overseeing the electoral processes in South Carolina.
